Intelligent tutoring and supervised problem solving in the browser

چکیده
Web-based intelligent tutoring systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated. One approach to the resulting complexity is to separate the application into a front-end applet providing the user interface and a back-end server managing the tutorial material. This makes it easier to integrate more complex questions and simple short answer questions in a single script. However, it is difficult to produce a tutorial client that can use a simple HTML page and also support rich interaction and “supervised” problem solving with a server-side tutor. We describe a system we have built which has these properties, and discuss our experiences using web standard methods to implement it. We also describe various places where we have needed to deviate from established web standards out of technical necessity, and evaluate the system's usefulness as a tutor. This paper describes joint work with Hal Abelson and Gerald Sussman from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Leveraging Semi-Supervised Learning to Predict Student Problem-Solving Performance in Narrative-Centered Learning Environments
This paper presents a semi-supervised machine-learning approach to predicting whether students will be successful in solving problem-solving tasks within narrative-centered learning environments. Results suggest the approach often outperforms standard supervised learning methods.

متن کاملAdvances in Intelligent Tutoring Systems: Problem-solving Modes and Model of Hints
The paper focuses on the issues of providing an adaptive support for learners in intelligent tutoring systems when learners solve practical problems. The results of the analysis of support policies of learners in the existing intelligent tutoring systems are given and the revealed problems are emphasized. The concept and the architectural parts of an intelligent tutoring system are defined. The...
متن کاملThe Problem-Solving Modes and a Two-Layer Model of Hints in the Intelligent Tutoring System for Minimax Algorithm
As a rule, intelligent tutoring systems offer a learner only one problem-solving mode, i.e., feedback is provided after each solution step. Moreover, system’s hints are ordered on the basis of a degree of informativeness and are delivered to a learner sequentially from the most general to the most specific. The paper presents an approach which provides greater adaptive abilities of intelligent ...
